Write, e-mail and telephone your City Council Member and Mayor Murphy.

Pittsburgh's elected representatives must know that you demand free choice and competition in the high-speed Internet arena.

The following is some sample correspondence you can use to tell your City Council Member and the Mayor, that you want the City's cable agreement with AT&T/TCI to protect choice.

Please do not send more than one letter to a City Council Member. Also, please remember to cast your vote in favor of Open Access.

Dear Council Member:

I wanted to thank Council for agreeing to hear residents’ concerns about the proposed cable franchise agreement between AT&T/TCI and the City during your public hearing on December 15.

While I commend Council for recognizing the importance of open access, I continue to be concerned that the clause relating to AT&T’s promise to offer open access to all local Internet service providers is not strong enough. As a district resident and Internet user, I would urge you to protect the interests of both local businesses and individuals by preventing this monopoly.

Please preserve my right to choose the ISP that’s right for me, by supporting a strongly worded open access requirement like the one presented to the Council by the Pittsburgh Open Access Coalition. Please make sure that I have a choice of Internet Service Provider as Pittsburgh joins the high-speed Internet revolution.

Sincerely,

Dear Council Member:

As a resident of your district, I am writing both to thank you for treating the issue of open access with the seriousness it deserves, but at the same time, urge you to do more.

Without your help and the help of the other members of Council, I fear that the open access clause of the AT&T/TCI cable franchise agreement may not be strong enough to prevent the cable company from backing out of its agreement to provide open access for all local Internet service providers.

Please ensure that competition and consumer choice for broadband Internet access are protected by reviewing the strength of AT&T’s promise to provide open access before approving the upcoming cable franchise agreement. I urge you to adopt the revisions suggested by the Pittsburgh Open Access Coalition to close any loopholes which AT&T might use to delay open access here in Pittsburgh.

Sincerely,

Dear Mayor Murphy:

First, I would like to thank you for recognizing that open access is a crucial part of the city’s agreement with AT&T/TCI. As a Pittsburgh resident and Internet user, I value my freedom in choosing an Internet service provider according to my needs rather than having one imposed upon me

However, I continue to be concerned that the language in the city’s agreement with AT&T/TCI may not be strong enough to prevent AT&T from reneging on its promise to provide open access to the consumers of Pittsburgh. Please support the changes to the proposed franchise agreement suggested by the Pittsburgh Open Access Coalition, so that local Pittsburgh business can have a chance to fairly compete in the next generation of the Internet.

I urge you to support City Council in protecting my ability to choose how—and for what price—I access the World Wide Web.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
