"We’re delighted that Pittsburgh City Council has demonstrated vision and
leadership in forcing AT&T Cable Services to accept the most aggressive
pro-consumer, self-executing Open Access provision it has ever agreed to
anywhere in the United States.
While we would certainly have preferred even stronger immediate open access
language in the cable franchise agreement with AT&T, we applaud the open
access terms of this agreement as an important victory for Pittsburgh
Internet subscribers and city consumers.
This agreement represents a further expansion of AT&T’s recent movement in
favor of granting open access in the short term. The agreement will ensure
that open access will be implemented in Pittsburgh well in advance of AT&T’s
promise to grant MindSpring access to its cable lines at the end of 2002."
